The I-team takes a look into the downfall of the Rhode Island mafia and the shifting power base of the Patriarca crime family. For decades the base of the New England mafia was located in Providence but times have changed and federal indictments of high ranking Patriarca mobsters have decimated the Rhode Island faction. Providence based mobsters such as former Patriarca family boss Luigi “Baby Shacks” Manocchio are facing indictments and Capo Robert “Bobby” DeLuca has disappeared and many fear may be working with the feds has forced the New England mafia to re-locate its power base to Boston.
According to law enforcement sources only eight made members of the New England branch of La Cosa Nostra remain in Rhose Island which include Raymond “Junior” Patriarca, Joseph Ruggiero, Rudolf “Rudy” Sciarra, Vito DeLuca, Pasquale Galea, Joseph Achille, William “Blackjack” Delsanto, and Robert “Bobby” DeLuca. Among these remaining made Patriarca family members only a couple are believed to still be active on the streets. Now it is alleged that the new boss and underboss of the Patriarca family reside in Boston.
According to law enforcement sources in this I-Team piece the new boss of the Patriarca family is allegedly Anthony DiNunzio the brother of former boss Carmine “The Big Cheese” DiNunzio who took over from Luigi Manocchio but is now in prison. Some believe there may now be a power vacuum in Providence leaving an opportunity for New York Mafia families to possibly move in and pick up the pieces or for even the new Boston faction to attempt to step back in and re-establish itself. So Rhode Island authorities say they have to remain vigilant and not count out the mafia in Providence just yet.
