Feds want leniency for Gambino turncoat DiLeonardo

September 9th 2011 | Posted by UnderBoss

Gambino crime family mobster turned rat Michael “Mikey Scars” DiLeonardo is set to be sentenced and faces life behind bars but prosecutors say he deserves leniency for his historic efforts of assistance. The former Gambino family captain turned rat nine years ago and has helped to put away more then 80 mobsters ranging from bosses to family associates. DiLeonardo has testified at 14 trials and helped to get convictions on charges of jury tampering , assaults, and murders against organized crime members. The feds say that DiLeonardo is believed to be the most used cooperating witness in the history of organized crime prosecution. DiLeonardo has not only been responsible for helping prosecutors hand out jail time but also to collect more then $30 million dollars in forfeitures to the government.

DiLeonardo was inducted into the mafia and the Gambino family in 1988 and went on to obtain the rank of captain in 1990 according to court documents. Then in 2002 he was busted and charged in a failed murder plot and an extortion scheme. Four months after he was charged DiLeonardo decided to leave the mafia life and turned on his mafia pals. DiLeonardo would then spill his guts giving prosecutors information about his life of crime which included bookmaking , loan sharking, murder , securities and wire fraud, and money laundering. He even admitted to having a hand in the 1992 shooting of Curtis Silwa a radio host who was targeted for bad mouthing the late Gambino family boss John Gotti.

DiLeonardo would also provide prosecutors with the entire organizational structure of the Gambino crime family and information on other mafia families and operations. With this information there were more then 20 indictments handed down by grand juries against several mafia families. Among those DiLeonardo helped indict were acting Colombo family boss Alphonse “Allie Boy” Persico , John “Junior” Gotti , hit man Charles Carneglia, and John Gotti’s brother Peter Gotti.

It is unclear how easy the feds want the court to be on DiLeonardo but his lawyers are seeking a sentence of time served covering the three years in prison he spent before he joined the witness protection program. The ongoing threat to DiLeonardo for breaking the mafia oath of silence was also noted in court documents pointing out several attempts against him to intimidate or gain retribution. Federal prosecutor Eli Honig said “It is very clear that if DiLeonardo was ever found by members or associates of the mafia he would be killed in light of the damage he has done to the Gambino family and other members of organized crime“.

DiLeonardo was sentenced today to time served and was released. He was sentenced to three years of supervised release by District Judge John Koeltl.
