Former Bonanna acting boss Montagna latest murder in Montreal mafia war

November 25th 2011 | Posted by UnderBoss

Former acting boss of the Bonanno Crime Family Salvatore “Sal the Ironworker” Montagna was murdered Thanksgiving morning in Montreal. Montagna was born in Montreal but spent his youth in Sicily before moving to the United States. Montagna’s murder follows the murder of Lorenzo LoPresti which sources say was a supporter of Montagna’s. Sources say LoPresti’s murder may have been a message to Montagna but the motive behind the hit on Montagna remains clouded in speculation. But many are now wondering was hit an internal cleansing because he was trying to become boss , was it revenge revenge , who authorized the hit , and will there be some kind of response from Italy or New York.

This hit is no doubt tied to the Montreal mafia war raging against the Rizzuto crime family which has seen many of its top ranking members murdered. Montagna was arrested back in 2009 by U.S. Immigrations and Customs and the deported on charges of refusing to testify to a grand jury and criminal contempt. Soon after he returned to Montreal in 2009 the attacks on the Rizzuto family began and many questioned if he was involved. Police sources have stated that there was a strong possibility that Montagna and the Ndrangheta or Calabrian mafia in Ontario joined together in a pact. Sources say that Calabrian mafia clans had links to Montagna through operations in New York that have flown under the radar. So the first shots against the Rizzuto family may have been fired from a Ndrangheta and Montagna coalition.

Police in Montreal say they have been waiting on a response to the Rizzuto murders to try and determine who is on which side. Police pulled Montagna’s body from the river just north or Montreal Thursday morning after witnesses reported seeing a man running towards the water and diving in after hearing gunshots. Montagna was pronounced dead at the scene. The Surete du Quebec has taken over the case.
