The one time leader of the Bonanno crime family Salvatore “Sal The Ironworker” Montagna was laid to rest on Monday. A small group estimated to be between 50 and 70 friends and family attended the funeral which was held at Our Lady of Pompei Church. As with any funeral for someone with mafia connections plain clothes police officers were on hand to document who was attending. Montagna was shot and killed Thursday morning on Ile Vaudry north of Montreal the latest murder in an ongoing mafia war. Reports claim that Montagna was chased from a location by gunmen before police pulled his body from the river.

“Pallbearers carry Salvatore Montagna’s casket into Our Lady of Pompei church”

Montagna was once called the “Bambino Boss” after he took the reigns of the Bonanno crime family in New York at such a young age. But the feds were able to have him deported and when facing a choice between Italy and Canada he choose to return to Montreal. Montagna was born in Montreal in 1971 but grew up in Sicily before moving to the United States. Montagna’s return to Montreal coincided with a Mafia war and a series of murders against the Rizzuto crime family. Law enforcement is still investigating what if any role Montagna may have had in the move against the Rizzuto’s.

The Montreal mafia war has seen many twist and turns and no one is certain as to who is behind the move against the Rizzuto’s or who is making a move to take over the Montreal underworld. Some have speculated that Montagna may have been hit because he was trying to make a play to take over and may have even been connected to other underworld elements through out Canada. Authorities feel that there may be more blood shed yet to come and the mafia war may not be at an end.
