Italy convicts over 100 Ndrangheta mobsters

In a major move against the ‘Ndrangheta or Calabrain Mafia over 100 alleged members were sentenced on various convictions of mafia related crimes. Some of the heaviest sentences were handed down against reputed Ndrangheta leaders who operated out of Milan Cosimo Barranca who got a 14 year sentence and Alessandro Manno who got a 16 year sentence. The overall boss of the Calabrians Milan operation Pasquale Zappia was sentenced to 12 years in prison and had to be evacuated by ambulance after hearing the news.

The convictions were the biggest in the last 15 years and all part of a major operation against the Calabrian Mafia or Ndrangheta ending in July of 2010 with the arrest of over 250 suspects. Also arrested in that operation was Domenico Oppedisano who was 80 at the time and is considered a top leader in the Calabrian mob. Italian police say that this operation showed that the Ndrangheta who are originally from the impoverished south of Italy have managed to move its operations into the more prosperous northern regions of the country.

Alberto Cisterna an anti-mafia prosecutor said that this major operation leaves no doubt that northern Italy has become the true operations base of the Ndrangheta and was its economic lung. Over the last few years the Ndrangheta has become the most powerful of the four main organized crime groups in Italy which include the Sacra Coronia Unita from Pulia , Naples based Camorra , and Sicily’s Cosa Nostra.
