New England Mafia captain Mark Rossetti who has now been exposed as a  FBI informant asked for protection from a state investigation. Last October the Massachusetts Attorney General charged Rossetti with running a crew of 30 members involved in loan sharking, gambling , and drug trafficking. The mobster is also a suspect in six murders a law enforcement source reports. And as the State Police closed in on him he went to his FBI handlers and wanted to protected.

Court documents claim that according to taped conversations Rossetti was told not to worry by his FBI handler that it was his job to keep him safe and keep him anonymous. During one of these taped conversation Rossetti was told “You don’t have anything to worry about if things down the road happen, but if that happens, we’ll have to deal with it as it comes. I will have to start working it out” by his handler.

The relationship between Rossetti and the FBI has come under scrutiny from many since court documents have been filed. The FBI is bound by strict guidelines when it comes to dealing with informants including one in which an informant be referred for possible prosecution if he engages in any type of violence while under FBI control. There is also a guideline which requires that the U.S. Attorney’s office be made aware that informants are being used which was put into place after the scandal involving the use of James “Whitey” Bulger by the FBI.

The FBI did put out a statement along with the State Police which said that once it became aware of the alleged crimes that they cooperated with state investigators but at no time were any guidelines violated. But the FBI has yet to confirm the exact relationship between them and Rossetti , how long it lasted , and did they obtain any useful information from it. Questions have been raised about how closely the FBI was monitoring Rossetti and his criminal activities while he was being used as an informant now that he has been charged with multiple crimes by State Police. Many question why a known violent criminal like Rossetti was even being used by the FBI as an informant and claim that he had little value in that role.
